The 2009 WWE Johnny Awards – Best & Worst Match Vote

The 2009 Johnny Awards will be posted on Monday, December 14. I will have my picks for each award and I will post the results from these polls. For the awards, the time period I’m using is from December 1, 2008 to November 30, 2009 so it’s the full calendar year of 2009 minus one month.

Best Match – To be given to the best match of the year.
I tried to cover as much as I could. I think the first choice is pretty obvious, but the rest of the top three is important too so make sure you pick three. I put 26 choices up there, so plenty of games to pick from. If one of your matches of the year isn’t listed then feel free to put it in the last option. The matches are listed in chronological order.

Important: When you vote, pick three. I’m picking three, so I want you to pick three too. If you want to pick just one or two that’s fine, but the most you’re able to pick is three. Not every poll will have this option, but in the cases of these two that option is available. Feel free to add comments after you vote too so we can generate some discussion too. Onto the polls…

Worst Match – To be given to the worst match of the year.
This isn’t as thorough as the best match. I don’t know the dates of a lot of them. I just remember them. I know that matches like HHH/Orton and Undertaker/Punk weren’t as bad as Chavowoggle matches obviously, but I know they disappointed people with how lame HHH/Orton was and how Punk was buried in the opening match after carrying SD for the summer. It’s all up to you to determine what worst means. Again, if you want to do a write in vote go for it.

Tomorrow: Best and Worst Feud
Thursday: Best and Worst Promo Person
Friday: Best Female, Best and Worst PPVs
Saturday: Most Underused, Funniest Performer and The KNOCK THE FUCK OUT~ Award

I won’t put any on Sunday, so there will be 3 on Fri & Sat. I want the Saturday ones to run two days at least.

HHH vs Orton only because it was so hot coming in, Orton HAD to win, and Hunter goes over in the most unconvincing fashion ever.

Your Internet fanbase won’t acknowledge it — but the Cena/Orton I Quit match was wrestling storytelling at its absolute finest. Glad it was on your initial list.

Mickie vs. Gail Kim was easily the worst match of the year. I bet a Khali or Cena match wind up winning the vote though, because most people probably just read the names and don’t even remember the match itself. Gail was off her game, and legitimately knocked loopy during that match.

if there was a best tv match that would have to go to rey vs morrison… but i dont know it holds up to hbk v taker cm v punk and y2j v rey that had the ppv hype advantage.

i remember watching elimination chamber and the smackdown one was really good and felt fresh when it was undertaker and triple h. But the edge one was alot more entertaining and for that reason only i chose my top 3 as.

    1. HBK vs Taker
    2.DX vs jerisho vs taker/cena @ MSG
    3. Raw Elimination chamber
If i could choose one more it would have been jeff vs punk because it was a very good match. but i still think you should have done best tv show match and best PPV match of the year.

Okay, for my pics as the best matches of the year, were Shawn Michaels vs John Cena on RAW from last year, it lasted over an hour and it kept me entertained all the way through, can’t believe more people didnt vote for it. Next would be Undertaker vs Shawn Michaels, need i say more? Then last but not least would be Jericho vs Mysterio (mask vs title). I always liked this match, especially with to veterans who know what they are doing, you know it would be a classic and it ended up being one.

Now, for the worst. I chose the Chavo vs Hornswoggle matches, i think everyone has actually, which its a good thing because i can speak for everyone that they got old after the first week. Second would be the CM Punk vs Undertaker in the Hell In a Cell match, whats the point of gaining Punk so much credibility then him ultimately losing in a squash match, it was awful. Last, but not least, and i can’t believe i’m going to even say this, but the worst in my opinion was the sloppy Mickie James Canton (yes i said it) vs Gail Kim match on RAW several months back. From two veterans more or less with these two they could’ve had a phenomenal match but it ended up being a botch fest galore. Hopefully we’ll get to see that match again yet this time, its booked right, they can do so much better.

@ Mike – I liked the I Quit match too. Good psychology and they worked hard. Ironman would have been a lot better if it was like 30 minutes rather than 60 because it dragged too much.

@ Brandon – The Cena/Michaels match was about 12 minutes and it was done by JBL to give Cena the hardest opponent possible before the Rumble match that he (JBL) had against Cena. The one hour Cena/Michaels match was from April 2007.

Most underrated match is Kidd v Morrison. Great spotfest and, besides Shawn v Undertaker, the most enjoyable match of the year.

For worst, I suggest people go back and watch the Mickie v Gail Kim match. I agree with Mike D, as far as execution goes it had to have been the worst.

I’m just glad people aren’t forgetting how terribly the Wrestlemania Diva Battle Royal came off. I’m including Kid Rock in that vote.

Worst match of the year … CM punk vs Undertaker. Punk who has been amazingly fresh this year gets squashed in what, ten minutes by a guy whos been back two months and does not need the title. What a cockup by creative.

I was really disappointed with the Batista vs Orton cage match (can’t remember the PPV . . . Extreme Rules?) where Orton lost pretty quickly . . . I think it was because Batista was injured. The match was poorly built up and the execution was just terrible. Plus, at the time, I really didn’t feel that Orton needed to drop the title in the first place.

Jillian vs. Melina should be the worst match, because Jillian lost…but I’m being serious, so I choose Chavo vs. Hornswoggle (where the heck is the respect for the Chavito Heat?!).

Best match? Come on, it’s Taker-HBK. That was a great match.

Worst? Gail/Mickie. I can’t believe that either woman was happy with their performance considering they’re 2 of the best female wrestlers in the world today.

I wrote in the Zak Ryder/Christian title match. Underrated match. Not best of the year, but still it should be looked at.
