WWE/TNA News & Notes for 12/11/09

The majority of this news comes from the Wrestling Observer Newsletter. You can head to f4wonline.com for subscription info. Meltzer’s been writing the newsletter for over 20 years, has a lot of contacts in the wrestling industry and his newsletter is widely read by people within WWE and wrestling fans in general around the world. It’s about $10/month for two weekly newsletters, lots of audio and their forums are fun too. I think you get your money’s worth if you’re a true wrestling and MMA fan.

– Umaga was set to return to WWE in January around the Rumble because WWE was going after people on the Hogan tour. He lived in the Houston area and owned a nutrition store with Charlie Haas. He was especially close with Shad Gaspard and Shelton Benjamin as well. The locker room took his passing very hard, as you might expect.

– Hulk Hogan’s telling people that the TNA deal with Spike is that TNA got a two year commitment from Spike to run full time on Monday’s opposite Raw. It’s Hogan, though, so you never know if it’s true. He’s been known to say stuff that isn’t true.

– Hulk Hogan will be in charge in TNA as head booker. He’ll basically be in Vince McMahon’s role except obviously Vince is the owner of WWE. He has full control as the decision maker.

– No word on if Ric Flair will sign with TNA. It’s a timing and money issue. He also may get contacted by WWE to come back with them in some capacity mostly to keep him from going to TNA. My gut feeling is that TNA will throw enough money at him to get him to sign with them, which will infuriate the people in WWE.

– Rob Van Dam might sign with TNA if they pay him enough. Meltzer suggests that he’s close to saying yes to them. He’s not clamoring to get back into WWE or going to TNA because he’s got money from his wrestling days and his business in California does well.

– Hogan wants to dump the six sided ring in TNA and go with the regular 4 sided ring. No word on if it’s officially happening, but that’s what he wants and he’s got the power. It could happen.

– The estimates for October’s Hell in a Cell PPV is that it did 280,000 worldwide buys, which is up from the 252,000 buys that No Mercy did last year. The name change should be considered a success.

– Bragging Rights at the end of October got 180,000 worldwide buys, which is up 172,000 from Cyber Sunday last year. Neither is a good number necessarily, but I don’t think WWE is going to complain about 460,000 PPV buys in the month of October. It makes you wonder too. If the PPV of the show is headlined by the top guys (Orton vs. Cena in the Ironman) and it does poorly the doesn’t that tell management that change is warranted? Maybe that’s why there’s a fresher lineup at TLC. I don’t know.

– Shane McMahon hasn’t worked in WWE’s offices since announcing his resignation. A person close to him says he was pissed about getting passed over for power (Vince gave himself Linda’s job rather than giving it to Shane). Can you blame him for being pissed off? He’s 40 years old, he’s worked in the company his entire adult life and when an opportunity finally opens up they look past him. I’d be pissed off if I were him too. No word on where he ends up although UFC is the most likely place.

– Future Raw guest hosts are rapper/producer Timbaland on 12/28 in Hartford and Don Johnson (Miami Vice, Tin Cup) & Jon Heder (Napoleon Dynamite) on 1/18 to plug their movie “When in Rome.” No word on the 1/4 and 1/11 hosts are. Obviously the 1/4 host is important to counter TNA, but 1/11 is as well because UFC is running a live show that night opposite Raw.

Don Johnson? I’d ask why but I suspect it’s a foolish question.

Taylor, I’m really happy for you, and you can host in competition with TNA, but Jeremy Piven was the greatest guest host of all-time! OF ALL-TIME!
